The local, circular economy and organic waste management

For one third of the year, the Autodrome Terramar will host public equestrian events. Clearly, these will generate a certain amount of waste (particularly horse manure), and we have opted to follow circular economic principles to manage this waste and in turn boost the local economy.

Example of equestrian manure management
This means that horse manure will not just be managed in a safe and environmentally friendly way, but it was also be used for composting in collaboration with a company that specialises in the manufacture of organic compost.
This will be reused at the Autodrome for gardening or farming soil. We also hoping to reach agreements with local farmers who wish to use this compost on their own soil too. *
During the time of year when equestrian events will be held (about 35% of the year), the horse manure will be collected daily to minimise any nuisance caused by odours. It will then be stored in a technical logistics area (away from residents) and later removed for processing. To do this, we have sought the collaboration and services of local management companies who are duly authorised by the Catalan Waste Agency.
As stated in a report produced by OUA, the company in charge of the Autodrome’s urban development project, in collaboration with biologist Jordi Escolà, “properly composted horse manure will be used as an organic agricultural product which is highly valued in organic farming and gardening because of its particular properties”.
In Catalonia, the management of manure generated by equestrian activity is regulated in accordance with the powers of the Catalonia Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food. And, as stipulated by the various regulations, the traceability of horse manure, from start to finish, must be guaranteed at all times. It must also be ensured that there is no risk to human health or the environment.
